Fasten your seat belts!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go forward and start our journey \u2013 one that\u2019ll be of great value to experts and newbies alike.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, let\u2019s start in the best way possible:<\/p>\n<p>Right from the beginning.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"whats-a-whitelist\"><\/span><strong>What\u2019s a Whitelist?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In case you feel you don\u2019t quite know what the term is all about, it\u2019d be great for you to check an article about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/whitelist-campaigns\/\">whitelists<\/a> where you\u2019ll find everything you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>Just a quick reminder: whitelists are born from data gathered from your campaign\u2019s placements.<\/p><div class=\"mobid-in-content-15-p\" style=\"margin-top: 26px;margin-bottom: 26px;\" id=\"mobid-99757860\"><div class=\"mobid-adlabel\">Advertisement<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/recommends\/semrush-v2\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"semrushtrialseo\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/semrushtrialseo.gif\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that \u2013 from hundreds or even thousands of placements that\u2019ll be targeted at the beginning \u2013 you probably will start noticing that some convert like crazy and others disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>What to do? I know you\u2019ve been able to guess correctly!<\/p>\n<p>You launch a cool whitelist campaign containing only those good websites you can count on.<\/p>\n<p>Before I start exploring the actual case study, I\u2019d like to point out the parameters that indicate that a particular placement is \u201cwhitelist material\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For a website to be labelled as such, it has to present a good overall performance, which depends on several parameters.<\/p>\n<p>Wondering which ones?<\/p>\n<p>The first one is obvious:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s hard to define what is or isn&#8217;t a reasonable number of conversions, given the delimited timeframe, and the fact that conversion numbers vary wildly from segment to segment.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, for a website in India or Thailand to have 3 conversions in, let\u2019s say, 5 days, is probably not a good indicator.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because these countries have huge volumes!<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s imagine the same would be true for Switzerland or Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Now that\u2019s what I call a pretty good sign!<\/p>\n<p>Other major factors to be taken into consideration are CTR and, of course, the CPM, which will tell you how much you\u2019re paying.<\/p>\n<p>It can happen that a specific website is converting a lot but it\u2019s very expensive and \u2013 even with a high number of signups \u2013 it\u2019s not becoming profitable.<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, perhaps the most important parameter to be taken into consideration is the eCPA.<\/p>\n<p>This metric mixes costs and signups, indicating how much you\u2019re actually paying for each conversion.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, something really important:<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the segment you\u2019re working in, you\u2019ve gotta be able to set some clear rules of thumb.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because the main word you\u2019ve gotta remember when dealing with whitelists is consistency.<\/p>\n<p>Coherence. Stability.<\/p>\n<p>You should not include websites that converted once in a lifetime and are likely to never convert again.<\/p>\n<p>One of these rules, for example, can be to only include sites that converted at least 3 times in a reasonable time range with a very good eCPA.<\/p>\n<p>This time range will depend on some parameters, especially GEO and spot.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry!<\/p>\n<p>Sooner, this info will be much more practical!<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to check all these parameters and situations in the case study.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to rumble?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p>Okay.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s present our star for this case study:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a campaign in the adult vertical for Turkey, for the ad size 300&#215;250, targeting just the browser Chrome and one operator.<\/p>\n<p>This is an already segmented campaign which came from a RON with a wide target.<\/p>\n<p>What happened was that Chrome converted but had lots of traffic and it was expensive.<\/p>\n<p>In order to better handle it, I decided to split it into a different campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign was launched on May 24<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>You can check the first results below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/whitelist-first-results.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" bit.<\/p>\n<p>Was the campaign converting?<\/p>\n<p>Check, as you can see in the G1 column.<\/p>\n<p>Was it profitable?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, no.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the payout in this segment was around 1\u20ac at the time, you can see (by these eCPAs) that I was losing money since I was paying more than I was making per conversion.<\/p><div class=\"mobid-in-content-15-p_2-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/recommends\/semrush-v1\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"backlinks\"><img width=\"970\" height=\"200\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Nonetheless, this was kind of expected.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the Chrome browser wasn\u2019t being profitable in the main campaign and that\u2019s why it was taken out in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, you can ask me, so why not just cut Chrome from the original campaign?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is that this is something that depends on the knowledge you have of the segment.<\/p>\n<p>If you know that a specific parameter is expensive, but it converts and could be worth it with lower costs or better targeting, you shouldn\u2019t just cut it, but instead, try splitting it into a different campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Alright, moving on.<\/p>\n<p>So, this isn\u2019t looking good.<\/p>\n<p>What do we do now?<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I did was to optimize this campaign, cutting expensive parameters.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, my costs were decreasing, but my conversions also decreased, and the eCPAs were just as bad.<\/p>\n<p>What now, then?<\/p>\n<p>Is everything lost?<\/p>\n<p>Is this promising campaign just a useless money drainer?<\/p>\n<p>Not at all!<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time for you to become acquainted with this article\u2019s hero:<\/p>\n<p>A whitelist!<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve already been able to check that this campaign is converting quite well, right?<\/p>\n<p>However, it continues to be expensive.<\/p>\n<p>This is usually a textbook situation to create a whitelist.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing you have to do to create a whitelist is taking a look at your placements.<\/p>\n<p>In this specific case, you should look at your websites.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s analyze:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/whitelist-website-analysis.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"277\" class=\"aligncenter size-large websites by conversions.<\/p>\n<p>This way, you can easily check which shall be the lucky ones that\u2019ll end up on your whitelist.<\/p>\n<p>You should also try to pick as long a period as you can, so as to have consistent data.<\/p>\n<p>I have obviously selected the campaign\u2019s whole life since it was a fairly new campaign.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth mentioning that, here, you see many good websites and are probably starting to ask yourself:<\/p>\n<p>Why was this campaign negative when it has such good placements?<\/p>\n<p>But remember, these are sorted by conversions.<\/p>\n<p>This means that it\u2019s normal that it shows the best websites first.<\/p>\n<p>The main optimization I did was to cut expensive websites.<\/p>\n<p>How to decide what \u201cexpensive websites\u201d are all about?<\/p>\n<p>You should sort by cost.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see \u2013 although my campaign was losing money \u2013 I had many well-performing websites, with great eCPAs.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the payout was around 1\u20ac, a placement such as the third one on the list, that converted 12 times and had an eCPA of 0.29\u20ac is a pretty good website.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to select which websites were going to be added to my list.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where you make use of those rules of thumb I alluded to.<\/p>\n<p>This is when you\u2019ll set your new campaign\u2019s profile.<\/p>\n<p>In this case \u2014 as we had many conversions and good placements \u2014 I opted to launch a very whitelist indeed.<\/p>\n<p>What do I mean by that?<\/p>\n<p>Bearing those high levels of consistency in mind, I just added the ones with a high number of conversions and considerably low eCPAs.<\/p>\n<p>The chosen websites are highlighted in blue on the table above.<\/p>\n<p>I could just as easily have included some placements with 2 or 3 conversions and very good eCPAs, but I chose not to, at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Again, these decisions are made because they serve the profile you want for your new campaign, and also due to the specific characteristics of the segment you\u2019re working in.<\/p>\n<p>Okay. So I selected the placements and cloned my campaign, with the same targeting, but just for these chosen websites.<\/p>\n<p>Is there something missing?<\/p>\n<p>Yes!<\/p>\n<p>I have to set the bid for my new campaign.<\/p>\n<p>How do I do that? I should put a bid that\u2019s consistent with the eCPM of these placements.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, you can see that the eCPAs are very good, so I had some leeway to do what I wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Since I need to set a bid for all the websites in whitelists, calculating the eCPM of the one with the highest\/worst eCPA is a good tip.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because if the bid is good for this one, it will be good for all the others!<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know how to calculate eCPMs, don\u2019t hesitate and read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/affiliate-marketing-metrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this academy article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes! That\u2019s what I\u2019m talking about! My whitelist was ready to rock!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re just missing one last thing:<\/p>\n<p>I have to decide whether or not I should keep the websites of the whitelist in the RON.<\/p>\n<p>How do we make this decision?<\/p>\n<p>Well, when you work with smart bidding, you\u2019ve gotta be extra careful to not enter into competition with yourself, in these cases.<\/p>\n<p>Cutting to the chase: you only leave the websites if there\u2019s a considerable distance between the position you\u2019re in the RON and in the whitelist.<\/p>\n<p>This way, you could be getting two traffic profiles.<\/p>\n<p>However, when in doubt, always remove the placements from the RON.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, I removed all from the RON, especially because it was already quite expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Wanna go straight to the fun part?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see its results in the first days.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"203\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results-700x203.jpg\" alt=\"ron campaign results\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results-700x203.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results-250x72.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results-768x222.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results-1024x297.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results-120x35.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ron-campaign-results.jpg 1792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, this is beautiful to look at, right?<\/p>\n<p>It already had an eCPA of 0.25\u20ac on its first days. Look at these CTRs!<\/p>\n<p>Nice. Is this it? Is everything perfect?<\/p>\n<p>Bells are ringing, birds are singing, and money is pouring like it\u2019s Wall Street?<\/p>\n<p>No!<\/p>\n<p>I still had to optimize this whitelist, cutting parameters that didn\u2019t work well.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I did, even though there wasn\u2019t much to cut since it already was a very segmented campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The whitelist was inconsistent for about 4\/5 more days.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the money starting raining like it was monsoon season! In fact, around the 10<sup>th<\/sup>, it was all profits for the Media Buying kingpin!<\/p>\n<p>What about now?<\/p>\n<p>Is this the end of this success story?<\/p>\n<p>Well, yes and no.<\/p>\n<p>First, you obviously have to keep an eye on the campaign to see if the good performance continues consistently.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, you\u2019ve gotta decide whether or not to keep the RON campaign active.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, you should keep the RON for as long as it makes sense to you.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because it can be great to keep feeding the whitelist with more good placements.<\/p>\n<p>If the RON isn\u2019t crazy expensive and is still converting, you should try keeping it active for a longer period of time.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I did.
