What are the differences that separate them?<\/p>\n<p>Today, we\u2019ll take a quick look at some of the differences, advantages and disadvantages of both <em>from a user\u2019s and an online marketer\u2019s point of view.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3g-traffic-vs-wi-fi-traffic\"><\/span><strong>3G Traffic vs Wi-fi Traffic\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The most logical benefit of the<strong>\u00a03G connection<\/strong> is that you can use it everywhere on your phone\/tablet and even on some laptops as long as your mobile carrier provides internet.<\/p>\n<p>The signal is coming from the cell tower of the mobile operator and<strong> that\u2019s why it covers a huge area.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The disadvantages are also quite clear: you usually have to pay your mobile operator extra in order to use this service.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, carrier connection is normally slower than Wi-fi, so it would be <em>difficult to actually work with it and process heavy data.<\/em><\/p><div class=\"mobid-in-content-15-p\" style=\"margin-top: 26px;margin-bottom: 26px;\" id=\"mobid-3031164840\"><div class=\"mobid-adlabel\">Advertisement<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/recommends\/semrush-v2\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"semrushtrialseo\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/semrushtrialseo.gif\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Even so, it\u2019s widely used for logging on social networks, checking your mails, GPS and searching.<\/p>\n<p>What about <strong>Wi-fi<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the disadvantages.<\/p>\n<p>First, Wifi is provided by local hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>This means the signal is weaker and you can only get it within a certain area.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, Wifi is more prone to attacks from hackers, <strong>especially because they can access your data in public spaces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As for the advantages, they\u2019re quite clear.<\/p>\n<p>First, the connection<em> is much faster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Secondly, if you use public spots, you won\u2019t have to worry about spending money.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"online-marketers-point-of-view\"><\/span><strong>Online Marketer&#8217;s Point Of View<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As a media buyer, you need to understand that Wifi and 3G\u00a0traffic\u00a0convert in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>You should keep this difference in mind when you\u2019re buying traffic, <strong>especially on ad networks that can\u2019t split 3G\u00a0and Wifi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first thing you need to take into account is that 3G\u00a0traffic usually converts more easily and better than Wifi because of the 3G\u00a0connection\u2019s billing solution.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of carrier\u00a0offers have direct billing option which means users are charged directly from the balance of their mobile phone after confirming they\u2019ve acquired the service.<\/p>\n<p>Wifi, however, <em>doesn\u2019t have the user\u2019s billing data.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why another step appears in order for the user to subscribe.<\/p>\n<p>The step will require the user to introduce his billing data and<strong> either a phone number or his credit card details.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Wifi, you\u2019ll notice that both your eCPM and conversion rates will drop.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the reason why, even in the same country, you\u2019ll notice that the eCPM\u00a0for the operator traffic is usually much higher than for Wifi.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, different operators in one country can convert in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Mobidea\u2019s global eCPMs for Portugal (the 11th of December 2015): MEO \u2013 98\u20ac, Vodafone \u2013 32\u20ac, NOS \u2013 18\u20ac, Wifi \u2013 1.3\u20ac.<\/p>\n<p>The explanation for this is simple:<\/p>\n<p>We might have different offers with different payouts, performance, and conversion rates, <strong>depending on operators (and their rules).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We usually try buying 3G\u00a0traffic first.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because the eCPMs are much higher and, therefore, there\u2019s a better chance of making a great margin.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the fact that the conversion rate is higher, <strong>you can make decisions based on relevant stats with lower volume.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s a catch: because there are lots of people competing for this traffic, <em>the traffic prices rise high.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What does that mean? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It means you gotta bid high in order to get a good volume.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s risky because it can force you to spend a whole lotta money really fast, especially in countries which have huge volumes.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a fact that media buyers tend to work with 3G.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, that <strong>doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s no money on Wifi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember:<\/p>\n<p>Wifi is cheap.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a huge advantage because, even if the eCPM of the offer seems much lower, <em>there are some countries where you can make a profit with the huge volume of Wifi traffic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another advantage is that there\u2019s almost no competition for Wifi traffic, so you won\u2019t need to fight a losing battle to get volume for a reasonable price (moreover, most of the remnant traffic found on ad networks is Wifi).<\/p>\n<p>Check these <strong>media buy tips<\/strong> that are gonna help you work with 3G\u00a0traffic and Wifi in different ad networks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you work with ad networks that can\u2019t split carrier traffic and Wi-fi, you should pick one of these options in order to be profitable:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose to invest in countries in which the profit from 3G\u00a0traffic compensates the overall spending on traffic (including Wifi)<\/li>\n<li>Choose countries in which Wifi and 3G\u00a0have a similar performance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>If you work on ad networks in which\u00a0you can split traffic, here are my tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create only 3G\u00a0campaigns.If the eCPMs within operators of an affiliate network do not vary a lot you can launch a campaign for all the carrier traffic together. If you see a big difference in eCPMs, I suggest you split your campaigns by operator. This is the only way for you to adjust your bid according to carrier and performance<\/li>\n<li>If you think Wifi is worth testing in a specific country, I advise you to <strong>create separate Wifi campaigns.<\/strong> That way, you can make your bid be much lower than it was for carrier traffic.
