thing right now.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, there seems to be some confusion about what it is and isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>As with most concepts, the confusion is probably due to questions over how to charge for it.<\/p>\n<p>This is similar to the American Psychological Association\u2019s diagnostic bible, the DSM.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, it is no more than a means through which mental health practitioners can justify their fees to insurance providers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A native ad is an ad format<\/strong>, nothing more or less.<\/p>\n<p>This format is designed, in varying degrees, to <strong>mimic the look and feel of the context<\/strong> within which it is displayed.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, it is characterized by its lack of intrusiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to think about it is someone who has \u201cgone native\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This person <strong>adopts the customs<\/strong> and garb of the locals in an attempt to assimilate within their community.<\/p><div class=\"mobid-in-content-15-p\" style=\"margin-top: 26px;margin-bottom: 26px;\" id=\"mobid-665638990\"><div class=\"mobid-adlabel\">Advertisement<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/recommends\/semrush-v2\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"semrushtrialseo\"><img \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Therefore, your ads are \u201cgoing native.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that we have demystified the concept of native advertising, let\u2019s get into the boringly exciting world of statistical projections that will demonstrate <strong>why you should go native<\/strong>&#8230;advertiser or publisher.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-tale-of-the-tape-native-ads-is-just-getting-started\"><\/span>The tale of the tape: native ads is just getting started<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediapost.com\/publications\/article\/272733\/in-app-native-advertising-is-soaring.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It is estimated<\/a> that <strong>75.9% of all online display ad revenue<\/strong> will be derived from mobile by 2020 and 63.2% of that will be from native ads.<\/p>\n<p>If the trend continues, the greatest proportion of that will be from in-app.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s a lot of elbow room left. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advertiserperceptions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/08.2016-Native-Report-Wave-2-Infographic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advertiser Perceptions<\/a>, 57% of US marketers have begun to adopt native advertising in 2016, while large scale adoption remained flat at 33%.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dialogtech.com\/blog\/mobile-marketing\/marketing-going-native-mobile-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speculation around the slow adoption<\/a> of native ads abounds:<\/p>\n<p>From lack of publisher awareness to scalability concerns, all the way to alien conspiracy (not really, just wanted to make sure you\u2019re reading).<\/p>\n<p>This will soon change: IHS estimates that third-party in-app native ads will be worth $8.9 billion by 2020&#8230;that\u2019s only 3ish years away.<\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake, this is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/programmatic-native-ads-are-growingbut-banner-habit-is-hard-to-break-1484737200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watershed moment<\/a> for native ads.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"every-user-counts-engage-them-keep-them\"><\/span>Every user counts: engage them, keep them<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The rationale is simple: a publishers\u2019 top concern is <strong>user retention<\/strong> and in-app users hate intrusive formats such as <strong>banners and interstitials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take too much for them to hate it enough to leave the app for good.<\/p>\n<p>The awareness and scalability issues are just a matter of market maturity.<\/p>\n<p>Awareness is already being resolved (just search \u201cnative advertising\u201d) and more players will enter the market, thereby resolving scalability.<\/p>\n<p>After all, it\u2019s an easy sale to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/advertisers-vs-publishers\">publishers and advertisers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For publishers, native ads represent a retention rate that is<strong> 3x higher than banners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For advertisers, they represent an increase in engagement by up to 60%.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"expose-me-once-why-native-advertising-works\"><\/span>Expose me once: why native advertising works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you look at the mere exposure principle wherein people\u2019s initial impression will be strengthened with each passing exposure, this makes sense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intrusive ads produce a negative impression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, subsequent exposures will have the opposite effect of what advertisers intended:<\/p>\n<p>The level of negativity felt when exposed to the ad will only increase.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, we have native ads.<\/p>\n<p>Because of their lack of intrusiveness and the simple fact that they mimic the medium in which they are shown, the initial impression that they elicit is <strong>neutral at worst.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thus, <strong>you will see greater engagement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words-examples-of-native-ads\"><\/span>A picture is worth a thousand words: examples of native ads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So, let\u2019s recap: native ads <strong>emulate the form and content<\/strong> that is a part of a given website.<\/p>\n<p>Makes sense?<\/p>\n<p>Great.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s look at a couple exceptional native ads in action, doing their thing (hint: look for the light green colors).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-onion\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The Onion\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Who are they?
