I\u2019ve been an affiliate marketer since 1997.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got into both the affiliate and the affiliate manager side.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, I first worked for a company called Medsite which was trying to emulate what Amazon was doing but they were doing it with medical books.<\/p>\n<p>I had to teach myself how to be an affiliate manager.<\/p><div class=\"mobid-in-content-15-p\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>There weren\u2019t really any blogs, or podcasts or any kind of guides at all at the time.<\/p>\n<p>I then spent about 10 years working as an affiliate manager.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been an affiliate since 97 and in 2003 I co-founded the Affiliate Summit conference and trade show with my partner Missy Ward.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-what-makes-you-excited-about-organizing-affiliate-summit\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>2) What makes you excited about organizing Affiliate Summit?<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The fact that the conference is a labor of love.<\/p>\n<p>We started out without ever intending it to be our main source of income.<\/p>\n<p>It was just meant to be a side project and over the years I had to stop doing other things.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I stopped in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped being an affiliate manager.<\/p>\n<p>I just didn\u2019t have any time left between the multiple Affiliate Summits each year and our magazine Feedfront that we put out four times a year.<\/p>\n<p>And just all the promotion and the organizing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/affiliate-summit-logo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2686\" wasn\u2019t time for anything more.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so fun to see people come together in each conference.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people refer to the event as a business family reunion.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just a neat experience to be there with people who truly like to work with each other.<\/p>\n<p>I love being a person who\u2019s able to bring it all together.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-who-created-affiliate-summit\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">3) Who created Affiliate Summit?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/578372465_e36fb478b5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2687 Missy\u00a0some 15\/16 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>We met at a conference called Affiliate Force.<\/p>\n<p>We were volunteering to help build it.<\/p>\n<p>We just went to see an event for the industry.<\/p>\n<p>There were things we didn\u2019t like about it so we gave some recommendations to the person who was running it and he didn\u2019t take kindly to our recommendations and sort of brushed us off.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2003, I just gave her a call sort of out of the blue and said \u201cwhat do you think of us trying to run a conference?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We had a chat about it and shortly after that we registered affiliatesummit.com and we got started.<\/p>\n<p>We had our first event in November of 2003 and had dozens and dozens of them since then around the world.<\/p>\n<p>It was really just born out of frustration&#8230;we were trying to help somebody else with their event.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t want the help so we figured we would do it ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t have any experience of running events and so, on paper, it didn\u2019t make sense.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t have any money to invest.<\/p>\n<p>It was really just us trying to do\u00a0our best.<\/p>\n<p>We created an event that was really focused on us.<\/p>\n<p>We kinda felt bored of other people\u2019s conferences.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why we figured we&#8217;d organize\u00a0a conference we\u2019d all enjoy attending.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when it all started.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-how-do-you-choose-the-spot-and-speakers\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">4) How do you choose the spot and speakers?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Years ago we were concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we had tunnel vision about how we were organizing the event as far as location, speakers and that sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why we decided to democratize the whole thing&#8230;so we have a vote after people submit all their proposals for speaking.<\/p>\n<p>We have a public vote and a vote on our advisory board which is made up of many dozens of people in the industry and all sides of it&#8230;so people vote for the sessions and that\u2019s how they\u2019re picked.<\/p>\n<p>The same thing goes for our locations.<\/p>\n<p>We ask for feedback after each conference and then that feedback is tallied for which location the conference should be in.<\/p>\n<p>Dating back to 2005 in the West of the United States it has always been in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>It wins by a landslide.<\/p>\n<p>It has jumped around a bit in the East side of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to New York City &#8211; where it has been most of the times &#8211; it has been to Boston, Philadelphia, Orlando, Miami. For the most part, New York is by far the winner of each year.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve just decided to crowd-source the whole thing and have speakers and locations and things that people want&#8230;and so we give it to them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-how-do-you-organize-such-a-big-event\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">5) How do you organize such a big event?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I guess that goes back to the wisdom of the crowds.<\/p>\n<p>We rely on our advisory board and our attendees to tell us what they want.<\/p><div class=\"mobid-in-content-15-p_2-2\" style=\"margin-top: 26px;margin-bottom: 26px;\" id=\"mobid-2429099814\"><div class=\"mobid-adlabel\">Advertisement<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/recommends\/semrush-v1\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"backlinks\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PD-970x250-Discover-backlinks-faster-than-ever-1.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PD-970x250-Discover-backlinks-faster-than-ever-1.png 970w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PD-970x250-Discover-backlinks-faster-than-ever-1-250x52.png 250w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PD-970x250-Discover-backlinks-faster-than-ever-1-700x144.png 700w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PD-970x250-Discover-backlinks-faster-than-ever-1-768x158.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PD-970x250-Discover-backlinks-faster-than-ever-1-120x25.png 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"970\" height=\"200\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Then, we do our best to deliver that.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really just trying to satisfy our customers as much as possible.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-what-has-changed-since-the-1st-edition\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">6) What has changed since the 1st edition?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Back when we started, we didn\u2019t have any experience at all running an event.<\/p>\n<p>We were clueless.<\/p>\n<p>It was sort of a nerve-wracking thing.<\/p>\n<p>We just made it up as we went along and we called in favors for our friends so as to get them to speak and help us to give out badges and every single detail of it.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, we&#8217;ve really come up with a lot of processes to do things and we\u2019ve staffed up.<\/p>\n<p>We have five people working for us now.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got the staff plus the two of us that handle things and then we outsource to an army of people when we arrive in the city for security and for registrations; for room monitors&#8230;the whole thing&#8230;so we hire a big team of people for those several days. It\u2019s just a lot more organized at this point.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t even have a payment process for the first one.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t have money for anything so we literally went to \u201cStaples\u201d and got some stickers for name tags.<\/p>\n<p>As for the payment processing, I just used my personal PayPal account back.<\/p>\n<p>I manually sent out confirmation emails.<\/p>\n<p>It was a very stitch-together, do-it-yourself kind of environment.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, we just learned how to do it better.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-whats-your-vision-for-the-events-future\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">7) What\u2019s your vision for the event\u2019s future?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to say where it\u2019s gonna go because we rely on what the people want.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re constantly adding and removing, changing things based on the feedback we get.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re gonna go wherever direction the attendees and the advisory board ask us to go in.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8-tell-us-about-your-journey\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">8) Tell us about your journey!<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/unnamed-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2694 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/unnamed-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"feedfront magazine 2\" width=\"489\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s more than 35 years now combined for Missy and I.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 20 years for me alone.<\/p>\n<p>When I got started it was back in 97 and I was newly married, I had just gotten a house and I was working in magazine publishing and not really making enough money&#8230;and had the house payments, the car payments, was still paying off student loans&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It was a struggle.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to find another source of income and I just came across the Amazon affiliate program.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t recall where I would have seen that at first.<\/p>\n<p>I decided I wanted to create a website and see what I could do there so I took a tutorial and I had an HTML on AOL and just taught myself how to create sites and just started there.<\/p>\n<p>My very first site was hosted so it was like a subdomain on AOL.<\/p>\n<p>It was just a site for things to do in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, it was a very primitive experience to be an affiliate.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon was the one company I was promoting and they didn\u2019t have online reporting or real-time reporting&#8230;anything resembling it&#8230;you got an email once every quarter with all the clicks and sales you had.<\/p>\n<p>I went an entire quarter without selling anything because I was working blindly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I went another quarter without making any money and then finally started selling some things and figuring things out&#8230;just did a lot of testing.<\/p>\n<p>I just made progress from there but it was a long grind at first.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t make money for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I think a lot of people may get the\u00a0impression that it\u2019s a \u201cget rich quick\u201d kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not, by far. It\u2019s get rich slow or get rich never.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago I created a site \u201cextramoneyanswer.com\u201d which was sort of in a book format, I guess about a dozen or so chapters&#8230;it just goes to the whole process of how to create a content site and it gives the warning that this is a place&#8230;it\u2019s the answer to get extra money&#8230;it\u2019s something that may complement your income but the majority of people will never survive strictly on their affiliate income.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9-if-you-were-a-newbie-how-would-you-start-in-the-biz\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">9) If you were a newbie, how would you start in the biz?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I would go into a vertical that interested me.<\/p>\n<p>I always recommend people not to go for whatever the biggest, hottest thing is but to go with what you think is interesting.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve made the mistake of trying to chase trends and I would always end up doing a lot of work and abandoning the project after a couple of months.<\/p>\n<p>I was just exhausted because I didn\u2019t like the topic.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t go out there and talk about fishing or sowing or something&#8230;things that I don\u2019t care about.<\/p>\n<p>So I create content and things that I\u2019m passionate about and I would suggest people do the same.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a great way to stay engaged with it and also you have a voice of authority and know what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n<p>Go with something you care about.<\/p>\n<p>It might not be the biggest niche but figure out some unique way to approach it and you can be the unique person that\u2019s talking about whatever that thing is.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10-evolution-of-affiliate-marketing\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">10) Evolution of affiliate marketing<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/shutterstock_3945798612.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2697 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/shutterstock_3945798612.jpg\" alt=\"affiliate marketing\" width=\"517\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s changed tremendously since I\u2019ve been involved with it.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s gotten a lot more formalized; a lot easier.<\/p>\n<p>Back when we were just writing in HTML it was just not very scalable to create sites but now with WordPress it\u2019s so easy and so approachable for anybody to break in there and give it a try.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s relatively cheap, too.<\/p>\n<p>You can just get a hosting plan for as little as 5 something dollars a month maybe and a domain for 10 bucks and that\u2019s all you really need to get started with it so it\u2019s a modest investment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really more your time and creativity that will take you somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>As far as predictions, I find that when I look back at articles where I made predictions in the past I\u2019m no good at it so I\u2019m gonna skip making predictions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11-most-important-affiliate-marketing-skills\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">11) Most important affiliate marketing skills<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019d say that \u201caffiliate marketer\u201d is a very broad term.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really a digital marketer; it\u2019s someone who\u2019s using any kind of different methods to market online, whether it be SEO, social media, email, paid search, etc.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many different ways.<\/p>\n<p>Some affiliate marketers use all these different skill sets; some of them are focused just on paid search or something.<\/p>\n<p>There isn&#8217;t really one kind of affiliate out there.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always been into content creation and so it\u2019s sort of SEO.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not deliberate SEO. I write what I think is quality content that\u2019s unique and it just automatically has the keywords that make sense because I\u2019m writing thinking of whatever that topic is about.<\/p>\n<p>I think the skill set is crucial but the central thing is patience.<\/p>\n<p>You need to have patience. You have to work in isolation for a while before you see success.<\/p>\n<p>You have to just go out there and do it and just believe in your project and stick with it until you can make it happen.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12-what-should-newbies-take-into-account\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">12) What should newbies take into account?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t even get started with it if you think you\u2019re gonna get rich quick<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just not a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Go into it if you\u2019re looking with a long-term goal that you..I don\u2019t know&#8230;if you wanna hit 50 bucks a month or 500 bucks a month.<\/p>\n<p>Work towards that, have patience and plan to stick it out.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t think you\u2019re gonna make fortunes in a short period of time because it\u2019s just not gonna happen.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"13-impact-of-social-traffic\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">13) Impact of social traffic<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Social can be essential for some people. They might rely on sharing through Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Other people may just fail to find it useful, especially if they go for something like paid search.<\/p>\n<p>It really depends on what type of affiliate you\u2019re gonna be and whether you really rely on people to share you.<\/p>\n<p>To me, social is important; to other people, it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"14-is-the-increased-competition-something-positive\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">14) Is the increased competition something positive?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019d say that &#8211; at the end of the day &#8211; the best content wins.<\/p>\n<p>Native advertising isn\u2019t really a new or a different thing, it\u2019s just a different way to describe it.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always focused on text links in my content versus banner ads because banner ads don\u2019t sell.<\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019m writing about domains and I link the word \u201cdomain\u201d to Godaddy&#8230;someone might call that \u201cnative advertising\u201d&#8230;for me, it\u2019s been affiliate marketing for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>I guess people just try to call things a different name every couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, it\u2019s all affiliate marketing to me.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"15-whats-affiliate-tip\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">15) What\u2019s Affiliate Tip?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/affiliatetip.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Affiliate Tip<\/a> is a blog I\u2019ve been running since 2004 or so.<\/p>\n<p>I made this crazy challenge for myself a long time ago that I was gonna blog every single day of the week, every day of the year.<\/p>\n<p>I really did it, for many years.<\/p>\n<p>It had a\u00a0nice frequency, and it was even gonna get indexed on Google but the content was really watered down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Capture.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Capture-1024x755.jpg\" alt=\"affiliate tip blog\" width=\"588\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was really scraping for things to write about.<\/p>\n<p>Now I just post there once or twice a week.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe a maximum of five hours a week.<\/p>\n<p>I do a podcast called \u201cThis is Affiliate Marketing\u201d at thisisaffiliatemarketing.com and I also post it to my blog.<\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s one post. Another post I do is just to add a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty limited now.<\/p>\n<p>My focus is drawing people to the Affiliate Summit.<\/p>\n<p>Everything else is supplemental to that.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"16-did-you-create-your-blog-to-share-educational-content\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">16) Did you create your blog to share educational content?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>These days, my blog is an extension of Affiliate Summit.<\/p>\n<p>I have some Affiliate Summit content there. One of the big goals for Affiliate Summit is to provide free education for current or future affiliate marketers.<\/p>\n<p>We have our magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/feedfront.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Feedfront<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anybody who\u2019s in the United States can get a magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/feedfront.com\/free-subscription\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subscription for free<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It comes out four times a year.
